This dirty chai latte recipe is one of my favorite morning treats during the fall and winter season! It's packed in warm, fall spices to give you all the cozy vibes but it also features two shots of espresso to pack in the caffeine for that extra kick of energy!

This is a close up of my dirty chai latte in a fall looking mug with chai powder sprinkled on top.

While I love this recipe for the colder months, you can easily turn this drink into an iced version that you can enjoy during the spring and summer months!

    Ingredients

    • Espresso Shots: I used my nespresso machine for this but you are welcome to use your favorite espresso machine!
    • Chai powder: I used the Trader Joe's Powder Mix but you can also use Sam's club Chai Powder. I recommend powder over concentrate for this recipe for the best taste!
    • Milk of Choice: (I used lactose free 2% milk). I recommend one with protein if possible such as soy milk if you're dairy free to help with blood sugar balance!

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

    1. Start by brewing your espresso into a mug.
    2. Next, add in your chai powder. Use an electric mixer to mix it in.
    3. In a separate cup, heat up ½ cup of your milk of choice. I usually do 45 -60 seconds in the microwave. Then use a hand frother to froth your milk. You can also froth your milk using a milk frother if you have one (milk frothers will typically heat your milk and froth it at the same time).
    4. Lastly, pour your frothed milk in to the mug with the chia and espresso. Stir and serve! You can optionally top your dirty chai latte with an extra little bit of chai powder on top!

Hint: You can also make an iced version of this drink by brewing the espresso over ice. In a separate cup, add in your milk and chai powder and use a hand frother to mix the milk and chai powder together and pour over the iced espresso. Mix and enjoy!

    Substitutions

    • Dairy-Free - choose a non-dairy milk and use a dairy-free Chai tea powder to make this recipe dairy-free. Most chai powders do contain dairy, so you will need to find one that does not. Blue Lotus is a brand that makes a traditional Masala Chai Tea Instant mix that is dairy-free.
    • Gluten-Free - use a gluten-free chai powder mix to make sure that this recipe is gluten-free.

This recipe is already lacto-ovo-vegetarian friendly as is.

    Variations

    • Iced - check out the hint below the instructions above to see how you can make this drink iced.
    • Decaf- use decaf espresso shots to make this drink significantly lower in caffeine.

    Equipment

To make this dirty chai latte recipe, you need to have an espresso machine. I personally use my Nespresso machine and I love it so much!

You will also need a hand frother or milk steamer and some basic glasses.
